Accessible website redesigns

When a website is outdated, built on a platform that blocks fixes, or full of deep problems, starting fresh can cost less than patching it. An accessible redesign builds good access into the structure, the design, and the content from the beginning.

When a redesign makes sense

We recommend a redesign only when the facts point that way. Typical signs include:

  • The site is built with tables or images of text for layout, so structure cannot be repaired without rebuilding it.
  • The platform is no longer supported or will not let you change templates, markup, or content types.
  • The design is not usable on a phone, which affects many people with disabilities who rely on zoom and large touch targets.
  • The cost to repair the existing site is close to the cost of a better site.
  • The site needs new features anyway, such as online payments, booking, or a document library.

If a scan shows issues that can be fixed on your current site, we will tell you. Our remediation service may be the better path.

How we design for accessibility

  • Structure first. We plan headings, landmarks, and navigation before visual design, so assistive technology users can find their way.
  • Readable by default. We choose type sizes, spacing, and color pairs that meet WCAG contrast requirements, and we do not use color alone to carry meaning.
  • Works with a keyboard. Every control has a visible focus state and a sensible tab order.
  • Clear forms. Labels, instructions, and error messages are written in plain language and linked to the fields.
  • Responsive. Layouts adapt from a phone to a wide screen, and text can be enlarged without breaking.
  • Content people can use. We help you write link text, headings, and image descriptions that make sense out of context.

What the process looks like

  1. Discovery. We review your current site, your audience, and what visitors need to do.
  2. Plan and design. Page layouts, navigation, and a visual style, reviewed with you.
  3. Build. Clean, standards based code with accessibility checks at every step.
  4. Test. Automated scans, keyboard testing, and screen reader testing before launch.
  5. Launch and train. We move your content, set up redirects so old links keep working, and show your team how to keep content accessible.

Search visibility and speed

Good accessibility and good search visibility share the same foundations: clear headings, descriptive links, text alternatives, fast loading, and a layout that works on a phone. We build new sites with those in place. We do not promise rankings, because no one controls how search engines rank pages.

Keeping it accessible after launch

A new site stays accessible only if the people adding pages and documents know how. We provide a short guide for your team and can add ongoing maintenance if you want us to check it regularly. Local governments should also read about municipal website development.

General information, not legal advice. Automated testing cannot establish full ADA compliance or guarantee protection from lawsuits. It finds some kinds of barriers quickly. A person still has to test the rest. Ask a qualified attorney how the law applies to you.

Frequently asked questions

Do you build on WordPress or another platform?

We choose the platform with you based on who will update the site and what it needs to do. We tell you honestly how each option affects accessibility and upkeep.

Will a redesign make me ADA compliant?

A redesign built to WCAG 2.1 AA is a strong foundation, but no one can promise legal compliance or protection from a lawsuit. We test carefully and document our work.

Can I keep my current content?

Usually yes. We move what is useful, fix it as we go, and help you retire what is out of date.
